Puffin, wanted to ask you, you mentioned on another thread somewhere about dispensation...is that Reell kompetens you are talking about? Does anyone ever get accepted on Reell kompetens and how is the best way on doing it..any tips? I am studying at Komvux and I am thorougly sick of it and I still need about 700 or 800 points for a slutbetyg. I don't have behorighet from my high school certificate...ps Please excuse my swedish english blandning. I tried the högskoleprovet once but my Swedish is not that fantastic and neither is my maths...

Hmmm - not sure that reel kompetens will really help you that much

Reel competence is a way for you to show that you have the equivelent of academic qualifications through other means such as work experience, volunteer work, time spend abroad etc - for example you might not have Engelska B but can show that you speak fluent English from a year spent in the UK etc/or perhaps you have learned maths from a different route such as construction/boat building etc

However it is not designed as a way in for people who are weak in certain subjects - just because you are struggling with maths and Swedish does not mean that reel kompetens will be an easier route as the University can still call you to take a test orbe interviewed as they will want to be sure that you can keep up with the demands of the course

Also the reel kompetens only gives you basic eligibility and not a grade - so for competitve courses they recommend that you take Högskoleprovet - however this is hard if you are struggling with swedish and maths

I heard somewhere that there are some Free Masters degree programs that one can have in Sweden. I'm considering applying for a free masters degree if I find a suitable one, because in UK are too expensive.

Can you recommend me a university for that purpose?

All Masters programmes are free to EU citizens - you will need money for your living expenses though

Check out websites as around 80-90% of Masters courses are taught in English - you might want to be wary of some of the small regional colleges (the ones that use the term Högskola/University college instead of University) as some of these have rather poor reputations (like South Bank and Luton in the UK)

Also how about housing/job finding. How much do I need to pay for hiring a place to live. I work in IT sector (web design), is it easy to find a job in this sector and how much would I be paid on average?

Housing depends on which Uni you choose - Stockholm is dire though - generally if you get a student room/flat the average is around 3000-4000 kr per month - private lets may be more

Jobs will be hard to find - especially one that will allow flexibility around your course programme - Swedish unis are in session 40 weeks per year and are meant to follow standard business practice of setting study work for 40 hours per week - plus lectures and many courses require a paper each week and an examined seminar - exams and/or examined essays at the end of each module - ie every 5-10 weeks

Unfortunately,now It's Free only to EU Citizens.Please check at Studera.nu ,is the official source of information about higher education in Sweden.You should do a deep research on the website,maybe there is a way for you to skip tuition fees.

I am an American military academy graduate looking for some help on the essentials of getting a graduate degree in Sweden. I sail in the merchant marine so employment and finances I can figure out on my own. Is there some kind of student visa available to foreigners? Are there any universities known for computer engineering programs? Lastly, is it common to see foreign students studying there or are people like me going to be few and far between? Thanks in advance for the advice.
