The Local _ Family _ Registering as Caregiver/Custodian for a Child

Posted by: Guest 10.Aug.2020, 02:33 PM

Hi there, I'm running into a lot of difficulty figuring this out and I'm seeking some help. I'm the step parent to a preschooler, my partner and I are getting married in October. We are located in Dalarna region. My partner currently has sole custody as the ex was an abuser. I only just got back into the country on a work visa, I don't have a personnummer yet, although I have sent the application in. I'm running into issues where I can't correspond with the school as I'm not an official caregiver but I'm the one who's going to be driving him to school (my partner doesn't have a license) and back and largely communicating with the school as my partner has severe social anxiety with his autism.
Any advice on what to do? I'm trying to register for afterschool care as some days I won't be able to pick him up early and he'd need to stay later, and I can't even do that. I'm at a loss. Thank you in advance for reading.

Seems like an adoption is required to make you an offcial caregiver: https://lawline.se/answers/kravs-det-adoption-for-att-bli-vardnadshavare-till-sambons-son

So if you don't do adoption, your partner has to do the more formal things, but for the practical things like picking up, check with the school if you can be accepted. Rules differ, in worst case an approval from both parents might be required.

Perhaps it is possible that your partner can sign over to you permission to represent the child in these matters?

It sounds like a tough situation, and without a personnummer you are likely to continue to have problems, since in Sweden, you don't really exist until you have that. Perhaps your employer can help you with that?

Another approach would be to go to the school and sort out the possibilities WITH your partner being present. It is possible if you explain the situation with the school you will find a solution.

You don't need to adopt or be related to the child to be one of their guardians. Your partner will need to do this though with various agencies; SV, benefits etc.. as it's these records the school automatically taps into at Kommune level. Not having a personal number is the big stumbling block for this. In sweden parent and guardian are two separate classifications, you can be registered as one or the other, or both.

As said above in the immediate term appealing to the school for assistance is your best option.
