(edit title) Sweden's corona response Is the country making the right choice? Options

It seems to me that there are two responses to the corona crisis...

1. To try and limit the number of infections by taking drastic measures to limit social interraction and individual freedoms for a period of time, or...

2. Try try and limit the financial impact on the economy by encouraging normal life where possible, thereby risking community spreading.

I worry that Sweden appears to have decided to pursue the second choice.

The "normal" flu comes around every year and is more harmful to us than it is, yet it is just accepted as a "normal" event...

So why all the hysteria???


Seasonal flu kills 291,000 to 646,000 people worldwide each year, according to a new estimate that's higher than the previous one of 250,000 to 500,000 deaths a year. The new figures from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other groups were published Dec. 13 in The Lancet medical journal.

I'm in the "Big Apple" we are going bonkers over here, the press is having a ball!!!

For the past half hour or more there is live video of a cruise ship going to port with a few sick people on it, and everybody is joining with an opinion about what will happen...Its ridiculous!!!

Seasonal flue has a fatality rate of 0.06%. Corona Virus has a fatality rate of ...well it depends what you want to believe, but at least 10 times that of flue. So in my book that makes corona virus more dangerous.

The world stumbles from one crises to another, the media makes money and the politicians create/make political gain, the stock market manipulators get rich and in three months people will say corona what???

I love it when people minimize the effect of an epidemic arguing that "X kills more people!". They obviously don't understand the meaning of the words "herd immunity", "pandemic" or "exponential growth".

The virus has so far killed around 6% of the people infected, by the way. There are already over 100.000 cases and increasing around 15% daily. At this rate there could be as many as 1 million infected people in a matter of a week or two.

Minimizing was not intended, it is serious but the "real" flu does not get the attention it needs...

The financial world does not react, politicians do not promise to give free vaccines if voted for and the media does not make a fuss...???

Considering influenza disproportionately kills old people with preexisting conditions and free vaccinations are made available each autumn in all industrialized countries, I would say the comparison is not granted.

Unless we are speaking about the Spanish flu outbreak which killed 17-100 million people about a century ago.

The 2009 swine flu pandemic ended up infecting around 1 billion people, killing 200.000 - 500.000.

Of course the following is pure speculation, but for the same rate of infection covid-19 could end up killing as many as 60 million.

Instead of panicking, follow the numbers.

Globally, the spread RATE of the virus is decreasing on a daily basis, even though the NUMBER affected will continue to increase for the next few weeks...

You mean like telling everyone returning from Italy that it is was OK to return to work or school rather than self-isolating for a period, only for instances to break out in schools (including my kid's school) a matter of days later.

there was no panic with svine flu, also coronavirus appeared in 2002 for a short time and dissapeared without panic, so it is nothing new but over reaction due to everybody having a smartphone and are constantly exposed to media hype.
