Ya, I always laugh when I hear about foreigners going to Meatballia for the nature (often Germans). Sure, some nice spots here and there (just like any country), but nothing w ... (show full quote)

Stockholm's archipelago is fairly unique and recommended, some of the lakes are quite nice and unspoiled. No, not world class.

Too bad the benefit of the natural wonders of Sweden are (euphemistically speaking) doubly offset by the misanthropy of the local population.

I don't think it's about having a pissing contest over which is best. But there might be a few factors in Sweden's favour as to why folk rave about what is here.

Low population density, most folk live on the doorstep of the outdoors, they likely go through it on their way to work, school etc and doing something in the outdoors everyday of the week requires very little effort. It is not about accessing world beating national parks or sights, just fresh air away from cars and buildings on a near daily basis.

Access, the open access legislation make it available for all and free. Unlike some countries which charge for access to a national park. Or in others you'll have some land owner with a shotgun encouraging you to move rapidly in the opposite direction.

Good point, you have to play the hand you were dealt.

I imagine learning to read runestones would be more engaging than interacting with the local population.

Perhaps it depends on where you come from. I lived my first 31 years in Los Angeles and I wake up enamoured by the beauty of the nature here every day. Every season has some new natural beauty to observe. Clean air, fresh water, so much space and peace and quiet. The fishing, the rivers and lakes to kayak, the wildlife... the solitude is delicious. And as an avid trail runner, the freedom of endlessly unspoiled running paths or trails you can carve yourself is heaven smile.gif

I suppose if I was coming from somewhere like British Columbia, I'd feel Sweden would be a downgrade of sorts. But it can only go up from what I'm used to wink.gif

You can join the chavs and raggers on mellbystrand(which is likely in Halland) but there are far better small beaches tucked away within Bohusl?n, or on Gotland and ?land.
