Could anyone help with a passport question?Visiting Sweden from Japan |

Hello. I am currently studying in Sweden and my Japanese girlfriend and I planned a trip for her to come to visit.
We have everything booked. Her flight is set up for next Friday; however, she just realized that her passport is to expire on June 12, when her last day here will be on April 2. From what she read from her government pages, Japanese passport renewals seem to take at least 1 week to be processed. Does anybody know if it's possible for her to visit with her current passport or if the Japanese government offers a different "emergency" way of getting the passport? We can't cancel the flight tickets, so we're quite worried that all our money is going to be wasted. According to other forums, about visiting other countries from the European Union, there doesn't seem to be a problem with the passport as long as it continues to be good for the length of the stay, but I'm not so sure about that... Any bit of information would be greatly appreciated. |

If you are a citizen from outside the EU/EES, your passport may not be older than ten years, and must be valid for three months longer than your planned departure date.
See : http://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/trave...ls/index_en.htm As far as I understand it - if you an EU citizen entering another EU country, your passport needs only be valid until the end of the trip. It's a myth, by the way, that you don't need a passport to travel within the Schengen area - you always need to prove your citizenship, and for a Brit (or a Swede) the only real way you can do this is with a passport. |

You may be able to get some kind of emergency passport - who knows...also you would have to find out if such were accepted to enter Sweden.
