Hello!
Just moved to the Stockholm area from Vanocuver, Canada. Im hear on a holiday working visa for a year. I am waiting on my residency card so i can apply for a person number. From there i would like to get started with the SFI course and see if i can pick up some swedish. Interested if anyone has any experiences with this course and how they found it. Mainly looking for information about how to best get a job. I am a plumber in Canada with 6 years experience mainly working in new construction hospitals/labs/ and commerical/industrial settings. Does anyone know if there are any construction unions here for the piping trade? Maybe even a few Commercial plumbing company names that i could apply to. Im a bit unsure of how or where to start my search. I hear i hear construction is very immigrant driven here and that not speaking swedish may not affect me to to much. But im really keen to learn! I would appreciate any info you have to share with me about this or anything else you may feel i should know thank you all! |

Go out and approach some firms directly. I've met a number of English speaking plumbers who are working, so it's definitely possible.

I would say that the struggle of going through the whole process just to get into SFI (they are prioritizing asylum seekers at the moment) is not worth the value that you will gain from a few months study, especially if you are only here for a year. A better option if you are really keen is to take some classes through Folkuniversitet. They do cost about 500-600$ CAN or so depending on the exchange rate but the quality of instruction is vastly superior and you won't waste possibly upwards of 10 or more hours of your time trying to navigate the broken SFI system.
As for plumbers, no clue, but best bet as said is just to approach people directly. You may want to check out some of the expat bars in Stockholm like The Dubliners where there tend to be groups of regulars that work in the construction trade and may be able to point you in the right direction over a round a beers. |
