I moved here 3 months ago, from Oxford in the UK, to live with my boyfriend. Its been a bit of a life overhaul but gradually getting settled in.
I find Norrköping a bit of a strange city though. I live in on the outskirts so don't really have much to do with the centre. Haha, I haven't even been out for a drink yet! Shock horror!

Welcome to Norrköping,just read your post and know exactly how you are feeling,i was in the same situation last year.Anyway i also live outside Norrköping so if you need some company you can holla at me.After some time everything will be okay believe,just take it easy

i have an ex (and good friend) living in oxford... it's nice city a city with heritage & a majority of buldngs not pulled down in the 60s and replaced with cold war boxes

it's difficult making friends here in norrköping though... i study swedish at komvux, but us english speakers are thin there... looking forward to retraining at liu later on... but even then i'm a guy in his 30s so it's a bit tough... my wife is finding it difficult too, she hasn't lived here in over 10 years since she left high school and old friends have kids and settled 'never left town' lives... to tell you the truth i would and could never go back to live in my hold home town... at least europe (even norrköping) has a quaintness smalltown nz cannot grasp... i just wish the food and events were a little better

on that note, if you like good coffee try the te & kaffe kompaniet, there's one at knappingsborg... i recommend the fair trade ethiopian

Oxford is indeed a very beautiful city. I do miss it's "Dreaming Spires". So many beautiful things to see. History is one of my biggest loves so having lived in a city with so much of it, I was in my element.

I have noticed the lack of English speakers in Norrköping. I am lucky that my other-half's English is superb and that of our friends. But sometimes I do feel a bit isolated but I know that will only get better with time and will improve as I get a better understanding of the language. I am still waiting for my residencey permit so am not "offically" studying Swedish but I have a friend who is a budding language teacher so she is teaching me. I can understand more than I can speak, which is good, but learning more and more each day.

I do love good coffee so I will probably go and investigate the coffee place you have recommended. Mmm... coffee

You all should sign up for Swedish at LiU, there are people of all ages in my course right now...ok maybe 20s and 30s is the average. The best part about it is that it's free, with only a 240 (+/-) kronor student union fee.

There's also a neat Master's program that just opened up for the fall--Scandinavian studies where you get to study a semester in different Nordic countries, it seems pretty cool...but I'm already enrolled in a different one

There are a few English folks studying out here at LiU...and well if you're ever down in Linköping, every Tuesday is International Student Night at the HG student pub!

tsm for the tips! i thought the swedish was only for those english speakers currently studying other programs at liu... so i went the komvux route which was easier in process but a little bogged down... swedish for english speakers should be a subject on its own... wasting two hours of your life on learning when to use capital letters is not fun

ps, at the risk of starting a war (shouldn't happen due to the finite number of responses to the thread) i have to say that my heart is in linköping... i like it... the buildings are less cold war, there's no traffic in the centre... it's quiet and has a more open, cosmopolitan feel to it than here in Sverige's Manchester...

I haven't yet ventured to Linköping. I know its only a short bus journey away from Norrköping but its just finding the time and the oppertunity to drag my otherhalf away from work and his computer. But I suppose I should really get around to making the trip at some point.

I lived in Klockaretorpet from 2000 until June 2008. My reaction to Komvux was exactly the same as yours. Perhaps a little stronger-as I am originally from "Da Bronx"
I did not have any problems with speaking English in the shops downtown. But then I am an old gray haired lady and people wondered what I was doing here.
There is the Symphony, movies, programs at the library and the free bus to the boats to Åland.
Norrköping is more for families (my guess-)than young people. It will soon be summer and you can explore.
