Applying for Swedish citizenship

while waiting for residence, and how to speed up

Hi

I am British and applied for residence status a few weeks ago due to Brexit. Haven't heard back yet from Migrationsverket. I have akso just become eligible for Swedish citizenship, having lived here while being married to a Swede for three years. And I'm really keen to get it as soon as possible.

Do people know if I can apply for citizenship while waiting for the outcome of my residence status? Or if it's not possible to have two applications at the same time with Migrationsverket?

Also, is there any way of speeding up the process of getting the citizenship application approved, as I know it can take ages? Or is the time it takes just down to luck?

Thanks

yes, i think its down to luck.
brits were being fast tracked due to brexit, heard many people getting it approved in weeks, or in some cases even days but unsure if they are still being fastracked, the official waiting time is over 2 years. you can ask for decision after a set period of time but think this was getting ignored.
my own personal case, was waiting 9 months, then heard about the fast tracking, and got it about 3 months later, so total 9 months. I think its a straight forward application has some effect.

When it comes to citizenship, I'm a little out of the loop but I would say -- be prepared that it could take a long time. I quit facebook 2 months ago but even up until that point, all the british moms in the Mums in Sweden group (which has several thousand members - not just a few) were all waiting 18+ months despite being married to swedes, employed, had dual-citizen children, etc. and still were waiting with no end in sight.

It's a conundrum, and it has really confused me over the years. Citizenship is a craps shoot. It seems to take either 2 weeks or 2 years. I applied last year and got mine in 2 months. It seems that most Americans (at least the ones I knew) were getting theirs within 2 weeks of waiting this year. I hear this rumor that UK folks are being fast-tracked and that's why the listed wait times are so long, but I personally don't know a single UK citizen who has gotten their citizenship in less than at least 1 year of waiting.

Take it with a grain of salt as it's only my one singular observation, but the one thing i can say for certain is that it is 0% predictable. There is no rhyme or reason for why some people get it sooner than others. I am dying to know why that's the case, just out of curiosity. Because every other type of application has a somewhat predictable wait time affixed to it. But with this, you could have the easiest case on god's green earth and still wait 2+ years. It is maddening.

Great thanks both. Do you know if I can apply for citizenship while waiting for the outcome of my (Brexit-related) residence status application?

looks like you should apply for residency, because you will need this, and can also apply for citizenship

It took me 2 weeks last year to get citizenship, whereas my Swedish born, educated wife who held a German passport due to rules when she was born, it took her 34 months!! Having spoken to various people, it can be a luck of the draw how quickly it takes.

I thought you had to be in Sweden for 5 years with a clean criminal record to apply for citizenship, but I could be wrong.

Since when have Swedes been entitled to German citizenship, the Hanseatic league era?

She was swedish born, that's not to say one of her parents weren't german, or then lived in Germany for many years.

Op. Took about 4 weeks for mine, but I applied in August 2019 which may have been before the rush and certainly pre covid. There won't be anything much happening in MV now until after the red day on the 6th.

When did that change? People I know living with their parter have been quoted 5 years by Mv in 2019.

I also thought it was 5, but it would appear not.

Kortare tid om du lever tillsammans med en svensk medborgare
Om du ?r gift, lever i ett registrerat partnerskap eller ?r sambo med en svensk medborgare kan du ans?ka om svenskt medborgarskap efter tre ?r.

I guess the question is how do you register as living with a partner over simply sharing a residency with someone? Not that it's my problem but I do wonder how people know when and how to register such a thing.

If someone is married I can understand it being a shorter time.

When I moved over we were given permanent residency after 3 years and that is as good as citizenship. The only difference was I couldn't take a study loan to study abroad (but I could to study in Sweden) and I was exempt form certain security jobs, such as the police and airport security.

Hi northernlad
If you are from Middlesbrough and living in Floda, then you need to know that it is not necessary to stay in a mortgaged property in Sweden for 25 years. You are free to leave, return home to England and then sell the house later.

You are not forced to stay in Sweden and apply for citizenship or residence status either.
The British Embassy in Stockholm can advise you on repatriation, for instance if you want to return to your mother in Birmingham.
