The Moderates and Sweden Democrats want people who have lived in Sweden for more than 2 years to pay for their own interpreters.
Currently everyone has the right to have an interpreter at a meeting, hospital visit, doctor and so on paid for by the kommun. "We demand of them, quite simply, that they must learn Swedish to enter society," says municipal councillor Cecilia Bladh. This adds to the problem which has been becoming a bigger problem over the past 15-20 years where English is taking over in schools and workplaces as the dominant language. Ten years ago it was made law that Swedish is the national language which had never been done before, enabling schools and workplaces to ban English from being used during official hours. Personally, I have a lot of sympathy for Sweden and they are fighting a losing battle on the language front. |

You know what will happen. The eu migrant who arrived, worked immediately and pays tax will have to pay for some translation. The Somali women who has been here a decade will be exempt because haven't had time to learn due to the 6 kids she's had. It's the classic excuse for not even finishing sfi as it is.

Ya, just imagine all immigrants to Meatball Land learn fluent Swedish. They learn to act more Swedish than the Swedes.
And unemployment for foreigners is still, what, 20-25%. Ya, Sweden, its a win-win for all. |

Yeah, that seems to be the way of things. A number of people have complained to me about that scenario because a lot of IT people come here from India. I have noticed it being a lot more of a problem with the 'you are in Sweden so speak Swedish' mentality in Sk?ne but I can understand it as it is so close to the continent. Some people in Sk?ne think someone who works 8 hours a day (9 with lunch) should go and do 2-3 hours SFI an evening which isn't reasonable. |

Don't forget the odd eesh, oj, or even throw in the odd 'yes' in, it'll make you sound very cosmopolitan. . But the uk isn't any better. Many folk start every sentence with so. Like, err, um, yeah, I mean, exactly, literally, etc. Some people do tend to look down their nose at other languages/cultures/countries without having the self-distance to realise people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. :-) |

You left Sweden, but had to create a new account just to complain. Didn't Germany share your view on your world class chemistry skills? |

...do you ever think about how utterly stupid the Brummie dialect and accent sounds to everyone else in the UK? And do YOU ever think about how most varieties of Bri'ish dialects sound to native speakers, around the world? Christ, in Belfast, which has 4, one of them sounds like they talk out of their noses. Ulster-Scots? WTF? Sco'ish accents are well liked though. |
