Hi.

If you feel like judging, go ahead if that will make you feel better.
I am looking here for honest advice, and trust me, I am already paying a lot for this stupid deed.

So here it goes. I have shoplifted at the hardware store, and have been caught. The police came, interrogated and everything. The amount for shoplifted goods were around 2.000 SEK.
I'm from EU country, and currently a student.
Police shortly said that the charges will be sent to the court, and there I will have to attend, where eventually charges will be placed.

Can someone please lead me to the right direction, of what should I do? Most importantly, how this will affect me, and what kind of punishment I can expect?

Is it your first time?? Was the amount less than 2000:-

Your will probably be fined if that is the case

It is my first time. The amount was something like 2100:-

I looked up, but it doesn't seem like there is any student counseling that would help with such matter.

I would like to know also - IF I was working, would the police or the court would contact my employee to get the payslips, since they need to know the amount of the income? Or they acquire such information without informing the employee on such matter?

Also, would the police would come to my home for searching the stolen goods?? I ask because they seemed very interested where I live and with whom. I have nothing to worry since I did not steal anything else before, but I would suffer greatly if the police just showed up at the house for such reasons.

You know, the guard that came to take me was very aggressive and instantly grabbed and twisted my arm, I was telling him to stop hurting me and that I am willing to follow him, since I knew there is no way out of this. But he kept shouting swearwords at me and was twisting my arm even harder. In a second another guard appeared and made it all look super dramatic (I mean, I'm a small sized girl, the force they inflicted on me was ridiculous and completely for show-off!).
Then they reported to the police that I was refusing to follow them! And this they said is another crime I have committed.
During the interrogation, I denied that I was refusing, because I was simply asking to stop hurting me and that I come of course. I don't know how it will look on the video, but these macho guards made it look dramatic. So I wonder, how this can affect the whole thing? Now I'm on painkillers because the guy really twisted the arm out of place - should I have gone to the hospital to get the paper of 'injury'?

Seriously. I hope some people read this with intentions for shoplifting and it will be a great deter! NOT WORTH IT! I have never ever regretted this much in my life.

I doubt this is something one can laugh about even after some years. This is really serious...

I had no consideration whatsoever that the value of the small things I shoplifted was so high overall, over 2000 sek.
I am reading the penal code, and there I find that if the sum is over 1000 sek, then it is considered gross and punishment can be imprisonment. I am really freaking out, people! I am an academic, normal person who did this stupid thing, and now I should be prepared for jail?? Please tell, do I need to start looking for a lawyer? Are there possibilities to do public work instead of being sentenced to jail or financial punishment?

Please help me find answer to these questions, I have such a regret, and I am falling into deep depression...

You will not be sent to jail. People that get caught with guns get fines these days.

Often the most important lessons do not come from school. You have made a mistake and will suffer a consequence. Most likely a fine and some humiliation and guilt. You will learn from it. Someday, perhaps, you will be tempted by another opportunity to steal and you will remember this incident and will not make the same mistake again. Life lessons can be tough.

Learn from it and move on is the best advice I can give.

About the criminal records though, I have read that it would stay for 5 years. How true is it? I am not sure what that means - would it be completely erased from my record after 5 years, or it will be accessible for my future employees for the rest of my life?

It is not for life as you stated it is 5 years then it is erased
