Hi everyone,

I was wondering what will happen to a letter if it doesn't have sufficient postage (stamps). Will I get it returned back to me? I wrote my address on the back of the envelop which I sent yesterday here in Stockholm.

Thanks in advance

They normally deliver it and then claim the excess from the recipient. Do not worry

The post office will send the letter to the address on the letter, then charge you 35 kr and correct postage for the trouble.

Now, don't do again, second time round and it's a minimum Skr.1000 fine, or one month in prison...

Strange you should ask...
I posted two letters recently, both to Swedish addresses.
Within fourteen days I had a demand letter from Post Nord seeking 41.50sek.
I called them on their help line and the dialogue went like this...
- can you tell me which letter or to which address was under-paid?
- no
- can you tell me in which post box the letter was posted?
- no
- can you tell me how you know it's me that sent the letter?
- no
- apart from demanding money, can you give me any indication - by the recipient's address or any other detail or proof - to confirm that it was my letter which attracted this charge and demand?
- no, it's illegal for us to keep records, like scanned copies or photos etc of mail
- so you're asking me to pay for something for which you can provide no evidence of fault on my part?
- well, yes, but you don't have to pay if you don't want to.
- since you can't provide reasonable proof, no I don't "want" to pay.
- ok, I've deleted the charge.
- and I'll hear no more of this?
- no it's closed now!

Good for a one-off and genuine error, but I wouldn't make a habit of under-franking any letter, just in case!
