I've been living in Sweden for seven years now and have only found three foreign YouTubers talking about Sweden in English. It's a genre that I have enjoyed watching in a few other countries, particularly China and Japan. Are there more in Sweden than I am aware of, and is there any need or value for more from your perspective?
Just in case you think there is some value in more of that type of thing, I've started making some videos about Swedish history, culture, politics, media, etc. The latest video was about the story of when a Scanian village was quarantined during the plague of 1711. No one has really seen it since I posted it, so I'm kind of doubting the point of me continuing making more, and just checking whether people here might be more interested in it, since my target audience was people interested in more English content about Sweden. https://youtu.be/GqTxOiTc46I Anyway, regardless of my shameless plug there, what about other channels in that genre? Do you care for it, or think it's a waste of time? |

Here's a new video on what we can learn about Swedish culture from Sweden's Coronavirus response.

Hi there,
Today's video is once again about Sweden's Covid-19 response, and why Swedes trust the government's strategy in dealing with it. I would love for you to watch it and let me know what you thought. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7O1gS5huv8 Hope you're doing well during these strange times! |

What are you doing to promote it? It won't grow organically so it depends what you want the end game to be. I watch Angry Foreigner but generally if I watch something on Sweden or listen to podcasts then I consume it in Swedish. |

I'm not doing that much to promote it really. Just have this post here, and have posted a couple of times on reddit, which has driven most of the views. If I make a video that I'm particularly happy with, then I might try and promote it more by sharing it on Facebook too.
Yea I generally consume media about Sweden in Swedish these days too, but I still enjoy reading the local and watching Andrew Austin. Big Steve was the only YouTuber doing stuff in English about Sweden the first few years I was here. Don't think he has posted in a while though. I'm kind of inspired to do it based on the lively YouTube community of foreigners in China making content about it. There you can find dozens of YouTubers with all sorts of backgrounds and political perspectives about what is happening. I find it fun to watch people from both sides of the political spectrum, because it's always interesting just how different their interpretations and representations of the situations are. Last time I saw something by Angry Foreigner was a few years ago and I sort of remembered it as being in Swedish for some reason despite the name, but interesting to know that he is still making stuff and it's actually in English. |

Another new video here:
https://youtu.be/5NBx6gZpaGA This one is about who decides Sweden's coronavirus strategy. In foreign media especially, Anders Tegnell is often portrayed as the brains behind everything, but by looking at SVT's "Det Svenska Popundret", I suggest that Swedes in the future will represent the health ministry's response as having been a very collaborative team effort that was particularly Swedish. Some people might say, "but of course it's a team effort, it's a ministry in the government of Sweden! Everything is always collaborative there!" to which I would say, "yea, but your saying that is my point. To you it maybe seem like the obvious, natural, objective way things are here, but I'm a little bit outside the culture, so what I see as being more objectively knowable is the fact that people do believe that and have that understanding of their functioning, and this might not be something worth pointing out to people are interested in learning about how Sweden works." Okay, rant over. Hope you're doing well. Take care! |
