I wonder if Russia/Moscow looks down on Sweden ? in the same way Sweden looks down on the UK when it comes to snow management?

I actually just got back from Stockholm and Riga. I have never seen so much snow in Stockholm after 12 years of coming there nor so cold as it was this past weekend. It is more snow then we have in Ottawa. Cities that normally have a lot of snow have much more equipment and experience to deal with it. Two winters ago we had 4.6 meters of snow... the city functioned normally. I was surprised how poor of condition most of the side streets and sidewalks were in Stockholm. Now I am back in balmy Ottawa with 0 C weather...

We had our dränering done last year & I have to say the guy did a good job when he was here (if you ignore general disrespect to other people's property), but God was he away a lot.
This ROT avdrag is certainly a double edged sword.

The current job just started is the fourth in 2 years. all the houses around here are 55-60 years old, so I suppose I should start thinking about all those rusting cast iron pipes

Surely the biggest difference in behaviour is that English people still go out and live their lives in winter, whereas Swedes stay home and light a lot of candles and har det mysigt.

Well, you are far better placed to comment on that than I am, VH-1. When i lived over your way, I often had cause to be travelling by road to central Europe. I can recall several instances of speaking to colleagues and expressing my reservations about travelling. They just laughed. The next day we would head south to Malmo and, although the fields may be white to the horizon, the roads were salted and clear. Sweden is totally geared up for it and they do a great job of keeping things moving. We Brits just don't experience enough bad snow to make it worth spending lots of money on countering its effect. When it does happen, we just write it off as Force majeure.

Personally, I think Swedes just take the bad weather in their stride and most things run OK.
They love to take the p*** out of the Brits because our trains stop running etc, but we don't see the point in installing millions and millions of pounds worth of counter-measures for something that will pass in a week or so. Just stay home and let it pass.

The probelm with Sweden is that not everyone has a number for a man to come and clear their drive way. Heaven forbid they might actaully do it themselves.

Everybody around here clears their own driveway. Even the 85 year old 2 houses down. We are all too mean to pay somebody

Er, like, maybe, I dunno. I just meant that streets and pubs in London are still busy in winter but in Gothenburg the only people you see out after 7pm any time from October to April are dog walkers.

The silly thing here in Stockholm is that te new underground trains are from France so they cannot break when the temp is too low...and the old ones worked! They reckoned it was cheaper to buy some southern European shit because we would not get snow again like in the 80's.
