Are there any universities known for computer engineering programs?

I'll let some of the posters with more specific advice answer this

Lastly, is it common to see foreign students studying there or are people like me going to be few and far between?

For the past few years Sweden has had huge numbers of overseas students which is the reason that most Masters programmes are taught in English whereas bachelors are taught in Swedish

However last year the numbers peaked as it was the final year of free tuition - this year the applications have crashed somewhat as most people tried to get in last year and avoid fees - so I doubt that you will be unusual but may be not as many overseas candidates as are on the current courses

Hello every one! I am planning to start studying at one of the universities in Stockholm Sweden, and I was looking for many times on the Swedish websites for petroleum engineering department and sadly I couldn't find any in my search results. I believe that there must be such programme to study for students who just finished secondary school here in sweden. But i can not find one yet. Is there some one who has samilar interest maybe, that can kindly provide me with some information leads to a clue about this. Thanks

I believe that petroleum engineering in Sweden is usually a sub-discipline within the department of chemical engineering and/or technology - you need to search kemiingenör or kemiteknik program - when I did a quick search the places that came up were not in Stockholm but in Karlstad and Chalmers (Gothenburg) - although KT H in Stockholm has chemical engineering from my quick read through it seems more focussed on medical/drug production and wood/paper products

All programmes require fluency in Swedish

Computer Science universities

Well you cannot go wrong with KTH and Chalmers. Upsalla has a good program as well. Being a Chalmers graduate my self I would not consider any thing other than Chalmers or KTH at the moment. Gothenburg is easier for students but not the best when it comes to further jobs.

I heard that education is free in Sweden (boy that is super nice) but will the state help you with your visa if you get in? Also, is there any aid from the university to help you get settled (find a home, job etc) ?

If you are from an EU/EEA country the education is free. You must apply and be accepted. You must apply for a student visa and show you have 73000sek per year of study in your bank account. Two year course, 150,000sek. Almost all courses at the undergraduate level are taught in Swedish.so you must be nearly fluent. No financial help is available. Good luck.

Education is free for EU citzens but non-EU citizens are required to pay tuition since 2011

When you have a degree course offer you are required to show that you can support yourself you need to show at least 7300 per month for each year of study ie you are required to have funds avaible as few students find work to support their living expenses
- 73000kr for a 1 year course
- 146,000kt for 2 year
- 219,000 for 3 years

There are certain scholarships available for study but most are focussed on developing countries

Swedish student aid is only available to those that have worked or been resident for 2 years prior to starting University

7300 per month not per week. They like to see a set sum amount in the bank or a guaranteed income.

What if you are getting a weekly allowance from your home country? Would that make a difference? The allowance I could get would be less than 7,300kr a week but not by much. Well by about 500kr.

because they run out of money
Mostly they want to see all of the money in advance as MV are strict these days as a result of people comming with promises of financial support from friends and relatives that never materialised - every year students have to return home without their degree

You would need to have documentary proof of this and a letter from an official source that you would continue to get it when living abroad *if* they accept it

Some get sponsorship, have savings from previous jobs, take out loans or have rich parents - there are also certain scholarships available

It is tougher these days to finance university study from outside the EU

Yes, very hard I'd say.. Do you have to apply for the student permit straight away after receiving notice that you've been accepted?

Well you need to have the permit before arriving in Sweden and the timetable is tight - people delay risk not having their petmit in time and missing the start of the course

QUOTE
Cause I think I can make 73,000 SEK for the one year courses easy enough but 146,000 SEK for a two year course would be tricky. I'll just forget about 3 year courses.

Also, is it illegal to have 146,000 in your account for when they check and then not have it there the next day? cool.gif

Well this is what some people do - however you need to thing about how you are going to pay bills - you can't rely on getting a job here
