current wait times for personnummer

EU citizen with permanent contract

Hi All,
new to Gothenburg and new to the forum. My search only yielded older threads, please forgive me if I overlooked something.

My question is: what are the current wait times for a personnummer from Skatteverket? My case is fairly simple: I'm an EU (German) citizen, with a permanent contract with a Swedish company. I went to Skatteverket and was done with the application within half an hour. They only copied my contract, passport and marriage certificate. The very nice agent then told me it "could be a few months". I'm starting work tomorrow, and I figure the HR department can tell me more, but I was wondering if anyone can chime in on the current wait times.

Thanks!
- Fabian

It looks like you are IN Sweden at the moment, under what kind of visa? Is it a Student visa? Or a Sambo visa?

You can only start work in Sweden when you have a work permit, and yes, that can take 3-6 months from application depending on which industry/area you are applying to.

waiting time can be few days to few years, depending on who will handle a case, pure luck, and you cant do much about it just cross your fingers, good luck

Just go to SV as said above and chase it up.

You will get a proper personal number and certainly don't need a work permit.

I called Skatteverket and they said current wait times are six to eight weeks. Much better than six to eight months - although I believe it when I have the number...
My employer called as well, and Skatteverket will issue them a Samordningsnummer for me, however, that also takes a few weeks. So we'll see which one is faster. At least I got paid, so that's good.

I was in the same position as you in July (EU Citizen with a permanent job contract in Sweden). I, along with my family had person numbers about a week after applying. This was from an application made at Skatteverket on Rosenlundsgatan in Gothenburg. I don't know any of my friends who are EU citizens with a permanent job contract who waited more than 10 days for a person number, although this was in the summer. Maybe they have less work then..

If you meet the criteria, fill in forms correctly, supply the correct supporting documentation you will find there is not so much hassle. As you've already discovered, just more normally processing times. Only Christmas post and holidays will delay your id cards.

Hi, I am not in Sweden yet. I was offered a permanent job in Stockholm. I have received my UT Card in Swedish Embassy. I will move to Stockholm in April. I understand that It is impossible(?) to open a bank account without a personnummer and of course impossible to receive the salary without a bank account. I wonder If I can speed up the process as below:

* fly to Stockholm for 1 night
* apply for a personnummer in Skatteverket
* fly back to my country

What do you think? Of course i won't have a home address. May I demand to send the personnummer to the employer's office?

You cannot get a personnummer if you do not have a residental address in Sweden.

No, it would not work.

To be registered
When you are registered in the Swedish Population Register you will receive a Swedish personal identity number (personnummer). The Swedish Tax Agency will register the following information:

which building and address you live at
where you were born and your citizenship
your civil status and any relationship to your spouse, children or parent.

It should be possible for your company to pay your salary to someone's else account (colleague/friend/etc) as usually they don't care to which bank account they're paying, but only care about taxes payed correctly, which can be fixed after you do get your registration.

Also, if you are relocating via a relocation company, ask them if they could get you a temporary bank account in one of the banks. There was a special service where they open a bank account with some bogus personnummer (like all zeros, or some special number) and then they update it with proper personnummer when you get it.

You can get a bank account without a personnummer. SEB gave me an account while i was still in the UK. Had to provide my passport and contract. It is limited in that it is only a Maestro card with no contactless or online payments, but you can get paid into it fine. All the US people i know got the same deal from Handelsbanken too. Once you get a PN and ID Card they will upgrade the account and give you a Mastercard, contactless, online banking, Swish, Bank ID etc.
