Hej!
I live in Los Angeles & my friend has invited me to spend 2 weeks with him in Göteborg. We'll be in the Västra Götaland area for the majority of the time, although we plan to spend a couple days in Sthlm & a couple days in the Skåne area. I've been to Sverige a few times before, but never to Göteborg, so I appreciate ANY & ALL feedback I can get! He's a student & currently unemployed right now (shocking, I know!  ). So, as a gesture of gratitude for our friendship (& also as a way of letting him enjoy something nice that he doesn't usually get to do) I wanted to treat him out to a few nice dinners while I'm out there. Oh, & I'm a girl, so it doesn't matter if the restaurant is romantic or not, it won't be awkward for us either way  Now, I'm not rich or anything, so it's not like I can afford a $1 million bill hehe, but could anyone recommend a few restaurants for me in the Göteborg area? (or perhaps east of Göteborg, too?) I know Sverige is expensive but I don't really know what is a common / decent price for a meal. I'm wondering if anyone could recommend a few "nice" restaurants - ones that would be a special treat for someone to go to, but also won't make me go broke? Maybe something equivalent to $50/person in the States? And then maybe 1 or 2 "REALLY nice" restaurants - something equivalent to $75+/person in the states? He has lived in the Västra Götaland area his whole life so he'll be WAY more familiar with restaurant reputations than me, so any help I can get would be great ! Also...what is a customary way of showing appreciation to a friend (especially a young friend...we're both in our early/mid 20s)? In the States, I would buy a nice bottle of wine and present it as a gift at the end of a visit, but is there anything special and more locally recognized in Sverige that I should/could do? He is a very dear friend of mine and we have a special friendship, so I would like to leave a warm, grateful impression Tusen tack! |

Sure Sjömagasinet is great if you are after the most expensive and exclusive restaurant in gbg. Its where international acts go before/after the gig ...Bono and the Stones did last year at least. Could be a highly memorable experience.
Or maybe you would rather try the many good funky eateries around town where you get good food and expertly made cocktails for a reasonable price without feeling like you need to buy new clothes to get past the maitre d. Places such as Tranquilo near Saluhallen,( the best caiparinha in town imo and great food) Sunday Brunch at the Park Inn Hotel, Svarta Oliver in Chalmers gatan - Två kanten also on Kungsports Avenyn Magasinsgatan in the old town inside the moat has some very trendy eateries also . Or blow the entire budget on Sjomagasinet. ( no offence Streja ). I would enjoy a variety of experiences myself - so my 2 öres worth

I must say it is refreshing to read such a thoughtful post. I am unable to advise on any Gothenburg restaurants but would suggest you avoid any Turkish ones. Seems that they may be spitting on the pizzas at the moment; Although depending on ones opinion, that may actually be improving the quality.
PM me when in Stockholm and I'll happily suggest a few seasonally top places to go to. |

Sjömagasinet is for sure expensive..

Fiskekrogen is a good one, if very expensive (although not as much so as Sjömagasinet). The best "normal price" restaurant I have found is actually a vegetarian one in Haga called Solrosen, the lasagne is 80 crowns including the excellent salad buffet and rocks the world.
Haven't found anywhere else worth recommending yet, if you stumble on anywhere good do let us know. |

Okej so here's an update - I just found out he loves cow -- good ole fashioned delicious STEAK. So, to narrow down the suggestions... does Gbg have any good steakhouses? I think I researched somewhere about a Texas Longhorn or something?

They have a Jensen's Böfhus at Brunnsparken, I think they're overpriced personally rather like their sister chain in England, Angus Steakhouses.
Sing out if you fancy a drink and frolic with a bit of foreign after your non romantic date with this friend. |

Why not check out the fresh fish? I mean come on! Live a little and TRY SOMETHING NEW! I bet he doesn't like massaging you either with fine oils. Spank him! |

I'm wondering as well as there is a restaurant pretending to be Italian near Lisebergshallen which is UTTER CRAP!!
I can't remember the name but don't go there. |
