Apparently.

http://society.guardian.co.uk/health/story...1886340,00.html

I liked this bit:

"Sweden, by contrast, is one of the wealthiest economies on earth. Its people are healthy and well-fed, its shops well-stocked, its communications excellent and its women well-educated, with virtually 100% female literacy. More than 72% use modern contraception and the average age for a first birth is 29. The fertility rate is 1.7. It is, in every way, a happier and healthier place to be a woman."

See, not so bad here really...

.

I think you may have missed that the article specifically mentions it compares Sweden to the rest of the Earth.

"...its shops well-stocked ...its women well-educated...More than 72% use modern contraception..." :?:

Erm...This contrasts quite highly with much of my experience here.

Do most of you actually agree with these statements?

Shops well-stocked? Maybe, but with very little variety. Women well-educated? How about social skills for many of them? More than 72% use modern contraception? Is "don't spunk in me" modern?

I'd say the local supermarkets here aren't much better or worse than the ones in London (except that there's much, much more choice of bread here and the vegetables are crap). I found myself wondering the other day what would be lost to make way for the shelves of booze if Systenet lost its monopoly. Then I thought Christ I'm really, really sad and stopped thinking about it.

Education-wise, I definitely think Swedes are more educated than Brits, taking an average sweeping generalisation. I've been bored by pissheads with degrees in Sweden, that never happens in London. Whether there's any value to it is another question. Never slept with a Swedish girl so I can't really answer the pill v. pulling out question.

mark, i think they're talking about availability to basic needs as in...gee, there's no bread or milk for sale today...insead of "they only have 14 instead of 40 varieties of breakfast cereal

as for using contraception. i would imagine not all women need is...those trying to conceive, those infertile, those not having sex.

and well educated. what percentage of swedish women don't have a "highschool" education? other western countries probably have higher "drop out rates."

Sweden beats Niger hands down.

(I think the article is rubbish, other than for highlighting how difficult Salawa's situation is.)

''The country needs more trained midwives, well-equipped antenatal clinics (one I visited shared its only blood pressure monitor with the district nurse - if she was using it, the blood pressure of mothers-to-be went unchecked), more obstetricians and a modern maternity unit in every town. In a perfect world, Niger would also have a vigilant system of postnatal care and beyond that, but equally important, clean water, a decent standard of living and good healthcare.''

The big question, Joanna, is how should Niger get there?

I agree that women are well educated, I mean everyone here is well educated... because it`s free. The saying in Sweden goes something like "if you don`t educate yourself when we have it free, you`re a loser." Which is somewhat true, unless you`re a sparky or something in which case harsh.

Disagree with the contraception stats, unless to elaborate on Mark`s crudity the "jizz over my belly" method is considered the height of controlled baby quelling.

Actually, the best maternity doctors and units are in south of Euorpe, Specially in Hospital Carlos Haya in Málaga.
