(edit title) Native English speakers in Dalarna Are there any, if so, where do we meet? Options

Hey guys,

There are lots of posts on the local forums about english-speaking meetups in western sweden but none over here towards the east. Are there any or do we have to make the 2 hour trip to Stockholm?

I live in Avesta and we don't have any meetups, lol, think I'm the only native english speaking immigrant here actually.

What about in the larger towns like Västerås or Borlänge?

It would be alot of fun to have a few drinks and bs with some native english speakers.

we live in between Avesta and Sala and have been here three years. It is only now we are finding there are other English speakers around.

What brings you both to Sweden (if you don't mind me asking)? I've moved here with my Swedish partner. I'm really keen to integrate as quickly as possible but, while I don't have a job here, it's pretty hard. I start SFI in Säter soon so hopefully that will lead me to meet people. Any tips in the meantime?

Hi Jennifer,

Well with me my wife is Swedish so that was one of the main reasons we moved here, plus we wanted to (and have a few years back now), start a family and Sweden is just fantastic for that with regards to daycare and parental leave etc.

We moved here in May 2006 and for the first few months I didn't know anyone, didn't speak the language, didn't have a job (I left a good job in London to come here), didn't have no friends etc. I started SFI in Hedemora in September 2006 and completed that by the end of January 2007. I then started looking for a job and landed myself á job doing 'praktik' in mine surveying at the mine in Garpenberg, this got extended to a summer job. When I had only two days left to unemployment I got offered a full time position and am now a trained up mine surveyor working 1200 metres underground everyday !

Don't listen to a lot of the crap on here when people say it will never work etc. For me things could not have been better, we have got a better life, we both have jobs, we have a wonderfull daughter, we have friends, and I have been speaking the language fluent for a few years now ! Although I still cannot stand the winters here at times, god I hate it when it's -30c out !!

Thank you, that's very comforting. At the moment, I feel a little isolated, I think once the Swedish comes then everything else will fall into place - work, friends and life in general. I'm still very confident I want to live my life here - it's a great place to build a nest and start a family. I've only experienced 2 weeks of Swedish winter in the past and, although I loved it, it will be interesting to see if I still love it 4 months in!

It sounds like you have a great life here! One last question, was the SFI enough? I've read on here stories from a lot of people who have done SFI and are still only speaking very basic Swedish. I've been studying Rosetta Stone which has helped me learns words but not so many sentences.
