It looks like the last Gothenburg University vs. Uppsala University post is over 10 years old, so I wanted to get some fresh perspectives.
I am an American currently applying for my Masters and just realized that you can only attend your top-choice program you are accepted to. Gothenburg had been my first choice for the past few months, but then I realized that its international ranking (#145) isn't all that great when compared to Uppsala (#115). (I put a link to the ranking below.) I don't know how accurate these rankings are, but it does make me concerned that Gothenburg won't be the strongest program (at least for me studying humanities). Anyway, I'm hoping someone could offer me a general run-down of their experiences either in Gothenburg or Uppsala. How do the cities compare? Is there a strong international student community? How friendly are the locals? What is the general reputation of both cities and the universities? How is grad student life and academics at these universities? Anyone who can weigh in on any of these questions would be greatly appreciated. Who knows, maybe the universities aren't that different after all. Tack! Rankings don't matter. Look at the universities in Souther Asia. They are at the bottom of the rankings, but according to HR and hiring managers in Europe and the US they all produce graduates that are of exceptional quality. Every single one of them is cutting edge in everything. |

QUOTE https://www.timeshighereducation.com/studen...anities-degrees Would you consider Stockholm university? I was looking at Stockholm University as that is the only Swedish city I've visited and enjoyed it there, but their only program in my field is in Swedish (their History of Ideas Masters). That is a very good point. - Appreciate the comments, anyone else who wants to weigh in on life in either of these cities would also be appreciated. |

Hello !
I haven't been to Gothenburg, but I did an exchange in Uppsala 3 years ago (already ![]() It's the fourth biggest city of Sweden, but I always thought it was quite small. I would always see the same people everywhere, which was funny. It's a student city, so I would argue that most of the life in the city comes from the Student Nations. There is always something to do and it's not that expensive. The transport system is on point but it's so easy to go around by bike that I never really used the buses. I was living in Flogsta with 6 swedish guys and 4 international girls. They were like my family ! Every single person I met was so sweet and funny. The campus is quite nice as well but it is very scattered and it also depends on what you are studying. My courses were all in the city center, but 3 girls from my corridor were in biology and it was a bit far (but not that much!). I loved my courses, the education system. Honestly, I can't find even 1 thing that I didn't like. I would really recommend Uppsala, but keep in mind that I haven't been to Gothenburg. Also, I wouldn't look at the rank all that much. I would pick the programme I like the most and that would be the most useful for my future ![]() |
