Is it just me or do other have a problem with there Swedish mother in law...? my girlies mother who is a complete nightmare! Is it me...
I mean we went away for a week and she moved in to look after the cats instead of our neighbour and she tidyed the entire house taking out everything in the cupboards and replacing it etc... thats just not normal and to take everything out (Nosey I think) I wouldn't mind but the house was clean anyways... Everything I say or do just turns into a bloody discussion... or its oh but in sweden we do it this way.. I do care im not swedish and i will do it my way... Those annoying bloody mats that you trip over in the hall and all around the house I picked up and chucked in the cupboard that created a disscusion that went on for like a year.. |

Haha, doesn't pretty much everyone have a nightmare mother in law (except my husband)? Mine is ok, very sweet, but incredibly straight which I find difficult coming from rather more laid back not to say deviant parents, and she could talk the hind leg off a donkey.

My m-i-l is a nightmare. :x
First, I have to hear from her that I must not be nearly as intelligent as she thought I was because I make a few mistakes when I speak Swedish. Evidently, she thinks she's perfect in English and never makes mistakes! Oh, and I'm wasting my brain studying to work with handicapped kids. Second, I am evidently responsibility for every shortcoming that she feels America has. I get questions about everything from the government to why a certain area in the U.S. doesn't have sidewalks. Third, now that I live in Sweden, I MUST forget my heritage and become Swedish. She says that is the only way I will be able to make my husband happy. (Although he seemed happy enough with me for the five years we were in the U.S. and the three years we were in Holland before we moved to Sweden in 2003.) Fourth and by far the worst, she and her daughter (my greedy, greedy sister-in-law) feel that my husband should not inherit a part of the family property in Åland so that there is no danger of it falling into "foreign" hands. I think this thinking way into the future (first my in-laws must die and then my husband before my foreign hands can touch anything) is sick. In-laws suck!! |

dont mess wih swedish moms, most of them are very tidy (pedanter) and will clean your house even if you dont want them to. And yes, if youre a foreigner (especially american) they will think less of you.
especially if you dont like carpets. how can you not like carpets? they look great, are perfect for framing a piece of furniture. there is no good advice for me to give you other than becoming more swedish and letting go of your past culture. We all know that there is one culture that stands above everyother, and thats the swedish culture (hehehe) joking aside, you guys must be very unlucky, most older women are very nice and sympathetic people. Maybe you got the conservative ones? |

QUOTE (Djinghis) And yes, if youre a foreigner (especially american) they will think less of you. She actually loves America and Americans. She would just like me to explain the shortcomings. And it's usually stupid stuff. "Why do Americans put ketchup on everything?", etc., etc. QUOTE (Djinghis) joking aside, you guys must be very unlucky, most older women are very nice and sympathetic people. Maybe you got the conservative ones? Mine's not conservative. She's just crazy. ![]() |

"Why do Americans put ketchup on everything?", etc., etc. Wow, you're kidding, right? You must be kidding. You have to be. I've been absolutely amazed over what Swedes put ketchup on. Pasta. Bacon. <insert any other meat here>. To the Swedes that become defensive: I'm not ragging on you, but from what I've noticed Swedes put ketchup on things that I never had before (some of it is pretty good with ketchup, except pasta...). |

Crap you're absolutely right.
I hate it myself. My Spanish mother cringes at the thought of putting cheap ketchup on spaghetti bolognese. |

My mother-in-law is too sophisticated to use ketchup. Or so she thinks.
Seriously, when she brought up the ketchup thing, my husband was very quick to point out that he's never seen me put ketchup on food, but that Swedes do it all the time, especially on cold macaroni and meatballs. YUCK!! |

My English granny always used to go on and on about how my American dad put ketchup on everything. Haven't noticed Swedes doing it to excess.

I totally understand you Dave my MIL is a complete nightmare too ...
Amongst other things she has said about a black friend of my DH "do you think they feel the cold like us humans?" :x She makes my children eat in the bathroom at her house (next to the toilet!) because she doesn't want them to make a mess of her living room floor (parquet) - when they stay with her in the holidays that is she doesn't dare do that when we are with them. When my 3 year old daughter tries to speak Swedish with her (given that she has only been going to Dagis 6 months) she said in a condescending way "really your Swedish is very bad" Whereas she is constantly saying "wasn't that funny" when she means fun and other equally irritating language mistakes. She used to drive me up the wall completely although now I try to ignore it as much as possible. DH doesn't get on with her terribly well but she is the only grandmother my kids have so I feel they have to have some kinds of relationship with her, even though she is a completely stuck up, racist snob. I wonder if this is an example of "I can tell where you're from based on what you put ketchup on". I grew up near Seattle and ketchup was usually for burgers, fries, hotdogs (essentially "finger food")... It's probably different depending on where the person is from. |
