Good morning all,
As I'll be moving to Sweden soon I'm trying my hardest to learn some language (got Swedish CD constantly in my car and I read through some text books every morning over breakfast). I know it's going to be a lot eaiser when I'm there and will have an opportunity to actually use it. I'll be moving to Kristianstad, and have friends who live furthure north, everyone keeps telling me to try not to speak with a Skane accent. What really is so bad about the Skane accent, am I not going to be able to understand it when all I currently know is what I hear on the Swedish CD? |

Yes its a bit different but nothing to worry about. Easiest way of looking at it is like comparing the Nth of England (say manchester) with the accent of London speakers.
If you can speak the lingo, you will understand it all, it will just sound different!! |

You probably won't be able to understand it until you've been around it for a bit. It's (IMO) heavily influenced by Danish which is spoken much further back in the mouth/throat. And WRT them saying not to speak with a Skåne accent, it's partly because it's one of those accents Swedes love to beat up on. Come to think of it, Swedes make fun of just about every accent in the country. I've heard Swedes make fun of accents from Göteborg, Stockholm, Småland, Norrland, Skåne accents... Even certain parts of cities have their own, ie in the Stockholm area there's the Söder, valley-girlish Danderyd/Lidingö, Rinkeby svenska... Just try to learn proper Swedish and you'll be fine. Besides, your foreign accent will probably come through no matter where you're living and have learned Swedish. |

If you can speak the lingo, you will understand it all, it will just sound different!! Agreed. But I would liken it more to Birmingham vs. London... A couple of months after I moved here, I was sent to Stockholm for an intensive 2-week Berlitz course. At the end of it, I was feeling pretty confident. But then I got off the train in Helsingborg . But don't worry, as the Bartman says... You will get used to it pretty quickly, and your English accent will only add charm to any bits of Skånska you may pick up. ![]() Mark Base Helsingblog For observations and opinions about life in Helsingborg |

Just learn the Swedish lang like the rest of us, and worry about the accent/dialect later.
Will be you moving in the town area or countryside? I live not far from Kristianstad. |

What Sandy said is the best advice.
FWIW, I just had my hair cut by a woman who's from a small town outside Malmö. Absolutely adorable and the only thing I noticed with her accent was the pronunciation of the letter "r". Of course, this wasn't my first visit with her and it definitely won't be the last. The moral of the story is that it doesn't matter what accent the person has as long as the person is attractive, has a nice voice, and massages your head for 10 minutes :-) |

I dunno.
Magnus spent a lot of time critiquing my (albeit limited) pronunciation. It wasn't until I told mamma that he was Skånish that she said, "Ignore him. We say things properly in Norrland." Then she made this noise that sounded as if she was speaking with porridge in her throat. |
